Using two different resins and one injection molding machine, dual injection molding optimizes the copolymerization of two materials. The process is simple and efficient. Furthermore, the variable costs of this process are low. This is more economical for the manufacturer. However, the cost of making molds depends largely on the complexity and production volume of the part. For larger production volumes, mold design and construction are generally more expensive. The cost of the mold itself also depends on the material used to make the mold.
A special mold is required to support the two shots. The mold must be designed in such a way that the first shot is removed from the mold before the second shot. It also had to be designed in such a way that it could rotate in two different ways. It is also recommended to use a two-color mold for better aesthetics.

The best tooling for overmolding is one with extended ejector pins and a design thickness of at least 1.2 mm. This mold also recommends two retaining rings on the back mold base plate. The nozzle should be designed with a special structure and spray action. High-grade steel molds are also recommended. It is also important to ensure that the surface of the substrate is textured. This increases the adhesion of the two materials and helps to form a good bond between the two materials.
It is also recommended to ensure that the parting surfaces of the mold are smooth. The thickness of the divider is also an important consideration. The minimum separator thickness for the infusion molded part may be 0.080 inches to 0.160 inches. This parting surface shall be smooth and 0.5 to 0.6mm wide. This allows the cavity to be more completely filled.
A first material is injected into the mold to form a first cavity. The cavity is then sealed. Then, a second material is injected into the mold to form a second cavity. This cavity is then isolated from the second injection. It is also recommended to avoid using excessive pressure. This is because this would cause the substrate separator to collapse.
Rotate the mold containing the first shot 180 degrees to allow the second shot. The second shot can cause shifting or flashing of the molded part. Therefore, it is recommended to place the first injection molded product on the non-operating side of the mold.
